Mr. Stillman, I am a verbal autistic adult and mother to a severly language delayed autistic 8-year-old,and special education advocate. I appreciated the tone of your article, and pretty much agree with your analysis, but wish with all of my heart that there was a need to for anyone write such a piece. It's not just Daniel's sad history that saddens me, it's the notion that anyone, whether they are on the spectrum themselves or not, must be actively educated about the value of respect. The point should be obvious that under any circumstances no matter what the recipient's abilities or disabilities. As the mother of a child who, without intervention, would probably grow up facing similar hardships, I am very grateful to you for reminding us all. Respect is always good. Period.
